Artemisia Gentileschi (Self-portrait)

Artemisia Gentileschi (Autorretrato)

Artemisia Gentileschi (Italy 1593 – 1656) is one of the most important Italian artists of the late Renaissance (17th century).

Caravaggista, her baroque style carried the drama of her idol in ambitious historical and biblical paintings (which was not normal for a woman in that age of chiaroscuro).

He grew up in a family surrounded by painters and sculptors in the last throes of the Renaissance, in the best possible city for art: Rome.
The artist is considered today not only one of the most notable artists of the Italian Baroque, but also a woman who paved the way for feminism.

When women in art were only allowed to be muses, she established herself as an artist. He used biblical characters such as Judith or Susana in his paintings as symbols of the fight against patriarchy.

We can only admire her. And that is why she is one of the artists selected for the "Breaking the Moulds" collection.
